If you are going to participate in the swap, please take the time to carefully read these FAQs so you can prepare your clothes properly for the swap.
What is a clothing swap?
Donate your unwanted children’s clothing to CARMBA for sorting and quality checking. You will be given bag credits based on the number of bags of clothes you drop off. These credits can then be redeemed at the Clothing Swap by selecting ‘new-to-you’ children’s clothes. Please note: credits will be issued upon entry.
Clothing must be in very good condition (no torn, stained or stretched clothing please), clean and ready to wear, all zips and buttons intact and working, and no offensive slogans or pictures. Damaged, stained and badly pilled items will not be accepted.
A good guide for including an item in a bag for swapping is -
Only include it if you would buy it!
Please sort your clothes into size and gender with your name and contact details attached to each box/bag. Bags not sorted into size and gender will not be accepted.
Each bag of clothes/shoes submitted will be 1 bag credit.
Please note: There will not be any child minding available on the day, so supervision of the children remains the responsibility of the parents.
Clothing can be purchased: $20 a bag
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How much does it cost to participate?
A. $5 CARMBA members, $10 Non CARMBA members payable on entry on the day.
Q. How do the credits work?
A. By 12 May 2019, you drop off filled bags of clean sorted clothes in good condition and we record credits for the same number of bags for you to collect on the day of the swap.
Q. What size bag should I use?
A. We recommend a recycled Coles or Woolworths bag or the green cloth bags. These are easy to work out as they are a pretty standard size. Really though it doesn't matter. If you drop off three nappy boxes full, then collect three nappy boxes on the day.
Q. Do the clothes need to be in excellent condition?
A. Yes! We will take clothes in great to new condition. We don't want anything stained, pilled, faded, stretched or damaged. If you wouldn't buy it, don't try to swap it!
Q. What can I do with my old clothes that are not in excellent condition?
A. Unfortunately we cannot accept clothing that is not in excellent condition. Clothing we receive that is not in excellent condition is disposed of at a cost to our organisation. To give your clothing another chance at life, you may choose to gift your clothing to friends or family members. You might also gift your clothing through the Buy Nothing Project, Freecycle or the Facebook Marketplace. Alternatively, where items of clothing need to be disposed of, please dispose of these through your own rubbish.
Q. Do you take just clothes?
A. We take just about any items of footwear and clothing. Please ensure that shoes are in good condition (e.g. tread still remains, toes are not worn through, any Velcro closures still work, and both shoes in the pair are included). Due to health reasons, we can't take underwear.
Q. How should I sort the clothes?
A. All clothes need to be sorted into size and gender. For example, boys size 0. If you don't have enough to fill a standard bag, pack each size/gender into smaller bags of clothing inside a larger bag. All bags must be clearly labelled with your name and contact number.
Q. Do I get to choose my own clothes on the day?
A. You sure do!
Q. Where are the drop off points?
A. We have drop off points around Canberra, see the above list and ensure you’ve arranged your drop off no later than 12 May 2019.
Q. Can I drop off on the day?
A. Not without prior arrangement with the organisers. We need time to organise and display the clothes and drop offs on the day make this very difficult. Drop offs will not be accepted after 12 May 2019.
Q. If I don't come on the day can I hold and carry over my credits till the next swap?
A. Not without prior arrangement with the organisers and only in special circumstances. You can send a friend or family member to shop on your behalf.
Q. What sizes do you go up to?
A. We take 00000 to about size 10
Q. How do I know you will have the sizes I want?
A. You don't! We can't guarantee the availability of any size as we can only swap what has been brought in by others. In the past we have had mountains of baby clothes up to size 1. From size 2 to 5 we still have a great selection. After size 5 we have less but it has increased with each swap.
Q. Can I donate clothes but not participate?
A. Yes Please! There is the option on the Trader’s Agreement form for donations only, refer to the above link for our new online form.
Q. Can my friends come?
A. Absolutely! CARMBA runs the swap as a benefit for members but we encourage people from outside the group to join in. The more the merrier!
Q. Can I just purchase clothes?
A. Yes. You can purchase clothing up to size 1 at a cost of $20 a bag during the clothing swap. Larger sizes may be purchased by negotiation and depending on availability from 3pm.
Q. Any other questions?
