Multiples Celebrate in Canberra and the Region

DATE: 28 Febraury 2014

Parents of multiple birth children in Canberra and the region are not alone, that is the message of the upcoming Multiple Birth Awareness Week (9 - 16 March 2014) and from the Canberra and Region Multiple Birth Association (CARMBA).

“This is an important week for us to let families out there know there is a group of people in their community who want to lend support in a variety of ways. CARMBA is a vibrant and active organisation which can provide a soft landing for those families welcoming multiple babies into their lives,” said CARMBA President, Amelia Haddock.

“Our theme for 2014 is “You’re not alone” and there is growing evidence that getting involved in a support group such as CARMBA can have real benefits to the mental health and coping skills of parents. Many people are unaware of the wellbeing benefits of joining a support group like CARMBA support groups can be a great place to find services, practical tips, resources and social events with like-minded people.”

Member of CARMBA and mum of five children including a set of twins, Teresa Duve said “Being a member of CARMBA means I’m not alone in this special journey. It’s that knowing smile another parent of multiples gives you when you walk in the room feeling like no one else in the world could possibly understand what you have been through the past week, no words need be exchanged, it's just a silent thumbs up ‘I've been there, I understand, it will be OK’.”

A variety of activities (see below) will be held during the week all over Canberra and on the NSW South Coast to celebrate, culminating in the Annual CARMBA Fun Day on Saturday 15 March 2014, from 2-5pm at the Holt Community Hub, Beaurepaire Cres, Holt. The Fun Day will feature a variety of activities including pony rides, a patting paddock, cubby house decorating and performances by Jam on Toast. Anyone interested in joining CARMBA and accessing the variety of services including hire pool, hospital visits, Family Support Program and social activities is encouraged to get more detail at www.carmba.org.au, contact 0411 883 844 or This email address is being protected from spambots. CARMBA is an active organisation founded in 1973 and services the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and adjacent areas. We are also proud to be a member of the Australian Multiple Birth Association (AMBA). Our aim is to offer support and provide information to multiple birth families throughout the ante and postnatal periods, the pre-school stage and the primary and secondary school years. Membership is open to all parents, guardians and grandparents of multiple birth children.

CARMBA’s Family Support Program (FSP) offers in-home support to families. This program aims to provide emotional, physical and material support to multiple birth families in need so that they can enjoy a harmonious home environment, quality family time and emotional well-being. The program is designed to connect volunteers from the community with families to help with their children and light household chores. The volunteer aspect of the FSP has been beneficial to our families and volunteers as well.

National Volunteer Week – 14-20 May

Volunteering and its surprising benefits

Australian volunteers are essential to society and many not for profit organisations would not exist without the support of their volunteers. Australian volunteers contribute more than 700 million hours of community service to many areas of society including community health care, heritage and arts, environment conservation, emergency services, education, social justice and sports. National Volunteer Week (NVW) provides a platform to pay tribute to these volunteers who donate their time and energy to help others.
